Sunday Summary Monday Missive Wednesday Witterings

Oh, hi there, remember me?

I'm that oddity who promised you a blog post and then cruelly stripped it away from under your nose because, well, life got in the way. But now I'm back! From outer space! (Well, I'm no Tim Peake but I'm at the parental homestead and the rules of gravity are different here so, close enough.)

I should mention that I'm now on shared wifi so access will be sporadic at best over the coming days.

I'm also frantically trying to get this post done before the next social engagement/wander round the block to look at the pretty lights in the vicinity with Ma QB. So, I apologise now for the brevity and lack of inspiration/usual QB punnery.

So anyway, how can I justify the time spent not posting on the blog? Let's see, shall we?

This week, I have mostly been ...

Reading

I'm going to be honest: this book may have had huge acclaim and won an inaugural YA award ... but unlike The Handmaid's Tale {Margaret Atwood} on which it is very obviously modelled, OEY belongs in the here and now, and in ten years' time many of the quasi-subtle cultural references will be obsolete.

And thank goodness for that.

Watching

... more Christmassy things, whilst doing Christmassy things!

To wit:

{Love Actually}

{National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation}
and this episode of iconic 90s teen drama My So-Called Life: 'So-Called Angels'. Couldn't tell you if Claire Danes exercises her notorious cry-face in this episode but she's infinitely watchable anyway.

Listening

... to Christmas music. Much of Christmas music. All of it. Latest additions to the QB Library of Christmas cheese:

Oh, and this. This is just wonderful. (Thanks to Jan and Ma QB for this one!)

Meeting my Voicerox Family for Drinks

On Tuesday a small, select bundle of VR Lovelies gathered in a local public house-like establishment for pre-Christmas drinks.

Admittedly it was a considerably smaller, more select bundle than I'd anticipated but it did mean I got to have a very excellent chat to one of our newer members, which transmogrified into him giving me some Pinterest-worthy life advice.

So that was nice.

Of course, the requirement to chat overrode the requirement to curate ample blog fodder so I'm afraid no photos of actual people.

But, a big thank you to those who braved the weather and pushed through the inclination to stay at home and ride out another evening of pre-Christmas panic to come and join us!

Carol Singing

Then, on Wednesday, I alighted from my train fifteen minutes late, which was actually not bad-going given the state of play across the network all week last week egads seriously Govia/Southern, woman up and fix your freakin' network with the money you extort from us yearly, you soul-sucking lugworms.

Sorry. Got carried away then. Where was I? Oh yes! Carol singing! I alighted, yada yada, went down some steps, yada yada, and found my church family singing carols in the station underpass, as is our wont every year. So I sang some carols and stuff. And it was a bit lovely. There were harmonies and everything.

I think we may have cheered up a few beleaguered commuters. Well, we tried to, anyway.

Enjoying another Christmas dinner!

By Friday night I was all ready to:

but I still had some

to do so over I went to the church hall for the annual Ladies of the Parish Christmas Meal.

Again I failed to provide ample blog fodder because of this whole talking-to-people habit I'm trying to refine but here is a picture of the rather wondrous and festive Christmas table that welcomed us!

The food was yummy (especially the puddings) and there was even mulled wine at the door; there were various quizzes (including a game that involved identifying 24 household objects through mini stockings), and crucially, good company and cheer. Oh and a Secret Santa -- always fun!

Decorating QB Heights

Yes, finally, on Saturday, I cranked up the tunes and, in between sending out the last of the cards and presents, and panic-laundering everything in readiness for the trip back to the Parental Homestead, managed to put up the last of the decorations also.

On a day-to-day basis QB Heights looks like a flippin' minefield of Belongings so I think there may be a Feng-Shui February on the horizon for 2016 or maybe even a January De-Junk.

But I overlooked that and basically chucked fairy lights, Father Christmases and candles on every available surface:

{Nativity scene in the Home Bar. Sacrilegious? Discuss ...}

{My Special Santa, with his twisted foot and hole
in the head ...}

{Notice the homage to humped creatures
and the TINY TREE ... #festive}

{There is no such thing as too many fairy lights}
{The boudoir on a Christmas tip | Notice my neat arrangement
of baubles. Classy. Always.}
And in case you were worried that QB was deprived of a tree, fear not: there was one ready waiting for me at the Homestead, bought off the market last year and too big to store at QB Heights during the year so cultivated by Ma QB since last December. And doesn't it look quirky now?

No prizes for counting the flamingos this time. Sorry.

Enjoying Christmas Dinner with my Lovelies

Then ... after all that ... and a church service on Sunday morning, I headed up to the Toby Carvery (or, the Carby Tovery) for a Christmas lunch with my Lovelies. And mighty glorious it was too. The best pre-Christmas send-off I could have asked for.

With big thanks to Jos, Charlie, Fern, Ken, Al, Amber, Finn, Steve and Keira for rocking up and being superb. And to Jos & Charlie for the magnificent giftage. And again to Jos for taking decent photos when I once again managed not to!

Singing | in our annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

{St Matthew's Christmas Tree looking a bit splendid}
Perhaps it's because this year has flown by (cliché cliché ... writer flagellates self for use of patently overused expression), perhaps because the weather is so g'dawful and limp, and not wintry at all (Honey, I Broke the Planet) -- or perhaps because we felt 'mildly' under-rehearsed -- most likely the latter -- but I was certainly not ready for it to be NL&C time again!

That said, I think we got through it. At the very least we mastered the trickiest of the carols, Bethlehem Down, thanks in part to the recordings I found on soundcloud that broke down the music part by part. (#humblebrag)

When done properly, it should sound a lil' bit like this:

And I was certainly feeling a lot more festive by the end of the service.

Well, I ought to keep back a few details of this week for the next post (whenever I have time/inclination to put it up -- Homestead Time is not the same as QB Heights Time so I'm afraid I can't promise a day on which the Summary will reappear ... I'm struggling enough to carve out time to spend on Pinterest and to hunt gifs for this post while not bleeding the house wifi completely dry) so that will be more or less it this week except for, of course:

Pinterest Pin of the Week

Weekly Web Finds ...

... will have to wait until I find more things on t'web worth sharing.

So it just remains for me to wish all my lovely readers, you FOQs, you, a Merry Christmas. May it bring you all you hope for. Thank you for your continued readership and support this year. You've been epic.

qb xx

Sunday Summary

This week, I have mostly been…

Preparing for Christmas! | I’m very fortunate to be heading back to my parents’ again this Christmas so my preparations are minimal. However, I couldn’t let the festive period go without decorating the flat.

Of course, the original plan was to Elf up the flat with a veritable North-Pole of white-paper decorations:

{"You need help with that?"}

I made a rather splendid Christmas banner for the window:

I embellished the Girls:

I set up some tasteful arrangements of baubles:

Of course, where I failed was to get bored after creating roughly 10ft of paper chains, adhered by glue dots, which would then fall apart when the glue dots failed. And then get frustrated at having to stick the wretched things together again (with more reliable staples this time!). Still. I had approximately 250 Christmas tunes to accompany me in this venture so all was not lost.

I even bought a tiny tree.

Top 5 Christmas Songs (in no particular order after number 1):

  1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas | by Judy Garland. Rosemary Clooney. The Pretenders. Anyone, really. It’s my favourite.
  2. Driving Home for Christmas | by Chris Rea
  3. Santa Baby | by Eartha Kitt
  4. Stop the Cavalry | by Jona Lewie
  5. Mistletoe and Wine | by Cliff Richard
And a special mention to these four:

That’ll Be Christmas | by Thea Gilmore
Christmas Spirit | by Richard Marx
O Holy Night | either by Richard Marx or – eek – Mariah Carey
Fairytale of New York | by The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl

Top 5 Carols/Advent and Christmas Anthems (again, in no particular order after number 1):

  1. Silent Night*
  2. O Little Town of Bethlehem
  3. Lo He Comes with Clouds Descending
  4. The First Noël
  5. In the Bleak Midwinter (but only the Darke composition)
* This rendition of Silent Night by Jewel is just... perfect (if brief).

And – I’ve finally got around to writing my cards. Probably a day before the final mailing deadline but what the hey.

Ice Skating | in Reigate

This is, I think, only the second year that there’s been a temporary ice rink set up in Priory Park – last year it was open air and it all got just a tiny bit damp, I hear. This year, the rink is hosted underneath a huge marquee along with sweetie stalls (and a stall selling mulled wine – winner!), with a miniature fairground outside – a carousel and helter-skelter, anyway.

http://www.reigateonice.co.uk/

My friend Matt kindly organised for us to go skating last night and – I’d forgotten how much fun it was! The rink wasn’t especially crowded which was great, and the four of us shuffled, coasted, slid along for a good hour. I’m no artiste when it comes to skating but I’ve got to the stage now where I don’t perpetually feel I’m going to fall over and I have quite good motion, from one foot anyway…

I’m awaiting video and photos from another friend who came along to spectate! This is an old one...

Watching Christmas/Christmassy films

So far:

Santa Claus: The Movie
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Love Actually
Elf and
While You Were Sleeping

I also have to give a shout-out to my new seasonal favourite thing to watch: this episode of My So-Called Life from 1994-ish (So-Called Angels). It's a little slow-moving in places but it's just... rather special. And ridiculously sad towards the end. Oh, Rickie.

Eating | @ Bill’s
Twice this week already. Yep. We held our departmental Christmas lunch in the Shepherds Bush/Westfield branch on Tuesday, and I met my family for a pre-Christmas lunch on Friday in Putney (Friday was Christmas Jumper Day, incidentally, so the three females in our party were suitably attired!).

{That would be me in a flashing, festive Christmas jumper. With one of Bill's superlative hedgerow fizz drinks -- elderflower cordial, sparkling wine, blackberry. Delicious.}

There’s something simplistically pleasurable about Bill’s (a chain that started in Lewes, near Brighton) – the food is filling, delicious and affordable, and unpretentious. I teeter between the macaroni cheese with leeks (no mushrooms, though, ewww...), or the marinated chicken skewers.

The service is great, as well – the staff come across as genuinely friendly and helpful. Long may it last.

Resolutions

Yea verily, 'tis that time of year again when we make promises to ourselves that once in a while we might keep but more often than not... don't.

My So-Called Life, Ep: 'Resolutions'

Like blogging more frequently.

The problem with this blog, I've found, is that a) I have so few readers that actually I feel as if I'm just blogging into the ether. Or blogging to myself. Which, let's face it, I probably am! and b) even after a couple of repurposings and redesigns and reimaginings and various other alterations beginning with "re-" I still don't feel like this blog has a clear direction or voice.

But then I don't want to shut it down because it's become a portal for me to keep following other people's blogs, and a place to collate my Pinterest pins, and sometimes I like the idea that I'm blogging into the ether, because I'm writing for myself... but also not if that makes sense.

But sometimes I think I'm missing a trick here with tqb.

My friend (and former colleague) Lauren, of The Curious Cat, writes honestly and effortlessly (and admirably regularly unlike moi) about her life experiences, notably her exciting current experience of teaching English in Tarragona; and oftentimes I think, actually, I could do a lot more than just present my holiday snaps with a short blurb of background.

This morning, while chatting to my best friend as her beautiful children ran (almost) tirelessly around a local soft play gym, I expressed my concern that I didn't have any news to impart to our friends in Australia and New Zealand in a group email, as:

Bridesmaids, still from here

or in fact children. I am persona non gaga as it were. A freak. I am the only friend among our group of five (well, four; one of us stopped being part of the group when she effectively stopped communicating with us) who's still on her own. At the age of 34. (It's getting silly now.)

But being my best friend she was very quick to tell me that my sprogged-up married friends love to hear the news of their childless single friends (er, me) as it reminds them of when they had a life pre-kids. Of course my conception was that my friends (not just the aforementioned friendship group, all my sprogged-up friends) feel so fulfilled upon sprogging up that they don't need to hear my pathetic news from the realms of the Great Childless and Unloved, population 1: me. But I've got stuff goin' on. Work stuff and rock choir
stuff. Yeah. So I shared that instead. Go me!

But I left a lot out, a lot that I tend to share on Facebook ad nauseum, like, writing a 50,000-word novel, trying to kick-start a badge-making industry from the safety of my front room, er, joining the Illustration Club at work (so I can learn some new crafty skills despite having no real artistic background, just a will to create shizz).

So anyway, I've decided to keep this blog going, try and spread its love a little more, and to this end, share my resolutions for 2013:

1. Walk the MoonWalk in a considerably shorter time than we did in 2012!

2. Spend less time on Facebook and more time creating, writing letters, working on the novel.

3. Increase my cooking repertoire -- back to the Come Dine With Me afternoons!

4. Stop complaining so chuffing much.

5. Sort out finances once and for all.

6. Get Beebop Badges off the ground as a sideline.

7. Go back to visit my friend in Sweden.

8. Read at least 24 books in a year if not more. (I did read more than that this year but I like to have a clear goal!)

9. Blog more frequently!

10. Tone up a bit. Cut out carbs. Generally stop eating so much cr@p. Go back to Nordic Walking.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
