Sunday Summary | Sweet like chocolate

Dear FOQ

I'm back!
Did ya miss me?
Silly question.
Of course you did.

This week(end), I'm wishing Ms AJ a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY for yesterday! 28! A growed-y up! Hope you're having a splendiferous time, young lady! In honour, here is a gif of ...

{PONGWANS!}
---

This fortnight, I have mostly been ...

Reading

I've been keenly awaiting Paper Butterflies, Lisa Heathfield's follow-up to Seed, and this was pretty stupendous, the kind of book you start reading ahead of all others on your To-Read pile because the temptation is too much, and next thing you know, you've been lying in the bath for over an hour, reading that book until only two or three chapters remain (and you try to finish it the next day over lunch in Costa and have to stop because, oh wait, there's something in your eye ... #allthefeels).

***SPOILER ALERT***

I'll be honest: I preferred Seed.

insofar as the premise was stronger, and the novel's world more believable. If extremely unnerving.

Heathfield is a vivid and adept writer, and you will get caught up in her interpretation of the world, but American she ain't, and there are a lot of cultural and linguistic anomalies in her depiction of a pre-teen, then teenage, girl growing up in the American 'burbs. Only the final chapters justify the setting.

That said, the threat posed by June's sadistic stepmother was real although we never quite find out whether her presence was the actual cause of June's mother's death.

I've also been reading ...

Wein excels at writing strong female protagonists even in time periods where strong female protagonists were grossly overlooked. And that is all. If you haven't read Code Name Verity and its sequel, Rose Under Fire, do. That is also all.

(Re)watching

{The Fault in Our Stars}

and

{Sarah's Key // aka Elle s'appelait Sarah}

(Oh, hormones, bless you for making my viewing habits so delightfully moribund ...)

Oh but also ...

{The Big Bang Theory}
On to season three now:

and Sheldon has just adopted his signature catchword.

It's funny watching the whole series back how some of Sheldon's most endearing quips are introduced much later in the series than I remember.

Helping out

... for a couple of hours on a stall in the local shopping centre, promoting the 150th Anniversary of our lovely church. We had less footfall than we hoped (having been left in limbo in one of the 'corridors' rather than right in the middle of the shopping action – fine, discount sofas, you beat us to the good spot ...) but we gave out quite a lot of leaflets, people did stop and chat, and a few children participated in the 'messy church' colouring and sticking fun.

{Photo by Fr Andrew}
I hope this means we get a decent turnout to the anniversary celebration proper on 18th/19th June!

It's always terribly sad when nobody turns up for your birthday party ...

Sorting

... my photos.

And happening upon this little treat:

Six-year-old QB sporting a cat on her head. Oh wait, no.

That is my hair, people.

If only GHDs had existed in 1984 ...

Catching up

... with my former work lovelies, Clare, Eloise, Evie and Katerina, for a 1950s/1960s dining experience at Ed's Easy Diner in Soho.

Much milkshake (oh, hello, Oreo) was imbibed, and much talk and catching up of the news was done. It's always excellent to see these women: they're funny, smart and empathic. A proper little support group.

I was back up in London the following week (after I swore to myself back in February that I'd never go back into that soulless chasm of self-absorption where people who walk right at you because they're too busy staring at their phones ... oh, just look up and watch where you're going, you mindless twonk-noggin, oh and everything costs twice as much because London mistakenly thinks it's worth the extra ... ahem) to see Katerina again, and meet her friend Luisa, so we could lay down some proper travel logistics for Greece, which is Happening Very Soon! Woop woop!

Είμαι τόσο ενθουσιασμένος!*

Expect many, many photos and such in the next Summary!

Baking

One of the (many) things I love about my new team (and also loved about my old team and basically any team I've ever worked with) is their full and enthusiastic acceptance of baked goods. Especially my neatly-honed lemon drizzle loaf, the recipe for which came via The Simple Things magazine some years back and is now my cakey go-to.

So, on my Extra Bank Holiday-day I set to baking some more of the aforesaid loaf, and experiment with the simplest of recipes in this awesome book Ma QB gave me for Easter – appropriate, I'd say:

I need to hone my biscuit-baking skills, and possibly make more space for the rolling-out, but I did give a game go to making vanilla cookies, in the ever-so-seasonal (!) shapes of stars, bells ... and camels. Yeppity.

{Slightly awkward camel positioning, there ...}

{I have the decorating dexterity of
a three-year-old ...}
But the verdict was good on all fronts, which was reassuring. I'll let them eat cake again, and soon ...

(Slow) Cooking

... because QB cannot live by biscuits alone (OK, I probably could but it'd be a little grim).

Sometimes, on a whim, you throw beef mince (pre-browned, about 250g for one person), onions (also pre-browned), garlic, oregano, basil, a carton and a half of chopped tomatoes, some courgette and celery, and a generous slug of vino rosso, into a slow cooker, leave for many, many hours on high or auto (at least six hours).

You boil spag, grate some cheese atop the whole concoction et voilà!

Spag bol magic happens.

Barn-dancin'

Last Thursday I brazenly wagged choir practice again (naughty, naughty) to drive (OK, be driven)

{Cheeky back-of-the-car selfie ...}
to the quaint little village of Markbeech for a barn-storming evening, with Ma and Pa QB, and a marvellous assortment of friends (hi, Jan!).

{Photo by Jan with thanks!}
It was quite a what-I-call whimsical evening, in a very remote little hall; the band were good fun, the caller was a good laugh (his stories were, er, let's just say 'tall'), and much, much dancing was done.

Oh and Ma QB, here's how I knew that Irish folk song I was vaguely humming along to – first heard on a fillum of course:

Ah. The dimples of Jeffrey Dean Morgan again. Sigh.

This week's Lovely People big-up feels like it needs to be a nice lengthy one, in alphabetical order: AJ, Charlie, Clare, Eloise, Evie, Fern, George, Jos, Katerina and Natalie.

Special mentions also go to cousin Jo who is ensconced in her last weeks of training for the 50k London to Cambridge yomp, to cousin Julie (HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR WEDNESDAY!), and to Fr Andrew who is also a Friend of Quirky, it transpires!

More in a couple of weeks.

Sunday Summary | sparkly like Goldschlager

Hello to you!

This week I have mostly been ...

Reading

I just love the re-enforcement Gilbert gives us creative types. Makes us feel special.

Watching

30 Rock | What. The. Hell. Happened. To. This. Programme?! Lost direction, much?! I will always love Liz Lemon (because, identification), and I have a lot of time for Alec Baldwin's random deadpan responses, but what the actual heck has happened?!

That shark circled right back around, and the programme jumped it, big time. Shame.

Incidentally, if you have no idea what I mean when I use the expression 'Jump the Shark', I'll explain. I use it a lot with most of what I happen upon on Netflix, such is my questionable taste in on-demand viewing:

It's a truth universally acknowledged that the hit series Happy Days hammered the nail into its own coffin the day The Fonz jumped over a shark on water-skis. As witnessed above.

Thereafter, any show that is has passed its best with a significantly stoopid storyline (or just plain lack of genuine imagination or direction) has 'Jumped the Shark'.

Witness: series seven of House.

And whatever series of 30 Rock I'm now on.

Ahem.

So I've been getting my intellectual fix on with War and Peace, episode one.

{via here}
Uhm, excuse me, I'm confused.

... Who are all these people and why are the young men being sent to war before we've been given a chance to appreciate who they are ... ? And why do all the girls look identical?

That said, Paul Dano (above, left) as Pierre Bustachopov << (not actually his name but I'm so very confused right now) is actually brilliant. [Update: I've just watched episode two and his surname has to be Bazook-ov]

He's this guy, by the way, from Little Miss Sunshine:

Yep.

Healing [my] Hands

All right, this may be the most unremarkable event in the history of events that QB has ever featured in the blog because:

and actually it still sort of is.

But if you've ever met me IRL (and chances are that you may have happened upon me IRL if I've persuaded you to read this, my weekly self-indulgent brain-dump ... oh, you lucky, lucky things) you'll know that for the majority of winter (and summer too), I'm 80% skin and 20% Elastoplast (other plaster brands are available) as my fingers just go, nope and split to smithereens.

{This is the least creepy
finger-related gif on Giphy ... | IKR?}
It's UGLY, y'all. I'm sure I've sent letters out smeared with blood before. I've approved layouts at work and left little smudges of DNA behind (so if anyone's cloned me without my knowing, now's the time to 'fess up).

Then, finally, when I was at the end of my tether one of my workmates suggested coating the handicles with a layer of Germolene (not Germoloids) and Neutrogena and wearing gloves overnight.

Er.
Mah.
Gerd.

The manual digits are almost 80% better already! (Thanks, Dr Pritty!) I've been plaster-free for almost a week and this in the same week my toes froze in -6 temperatures at Clapham Junction.

We're onto a winner!

Or, not?

Deciding Not to Be Like Bill

That's one more social media bandwagon I'm not leaping on ... [Sorry. "onto which I'm not leaping."]

Foyle'd Again

On Wednesday, driven by a great need to Be around Books and more crucially Eat Cake and Put the World to Rights, I headed over to Foyles on Charing Cross Road and awaited the arrival of Clare, Katerina and Eloise.

Of course, me keeping slacker hours (well, not really, 8.30am-4.30pm working hours aren't exactly slack, just different), I was there much too early in spite of having got lost and taken a turning onto Oxford Street (Gah! Gah! Hellish!) rather than CXR.

Still, after a neat little segue via Chinatown:

 I arrived on the Hallowed Doorstep of Foyles, and carved out a little bit of time to buy me a book:

{because I missed the fillum}
then headed on up to the very popular and overcrowded cafe to seek out a little bit of space for ma ladies, initially opposite the standard beardy hipster with a Mac, reading Foucault.

I kid thee not.

{Whatever you say, hipster Jared Leto. Wait, is he rocking a ... man bun? Oh, Jared.
And it's "seriously". Did Brian Krakow teach you nothing?}
... I did have to eat my body weight in bread, oil and vinegar while I waited:

but it was worth it -- we had a lovely catch-up and the World was Duly Put to Rights, before we outstayed our welcome both in the cafe and downstairs, browsing the gorgeous stationery.

These, please?:

We missed Miss Evie, though; hope to catch up with you very soon.

Cooking

So, on Saturday night I attempted this dish from an aforementioned Guardian Meals for One article.

Lemon sole in dill and sweet chilli sauce

It. Was. A. Bust. An Epic Fail.

Apparently lemon sole fillet and a whole lemon sole do not respond to cooking in the same way.

One falls apart like kitchen paper. The other probably doesn't so much.

Also, how a single tbsp of any condiment even when mixed together makes a sauce of any substance, I don't know; I cooked them into a syrup and the ingredients disintegrated into a gummy mess. (I place no blame at my own feet, of course ...)

And another thing.

Where on earth does one find sake or rice wine in a town where the McDonald's garners publicity for being a little bit ropey? Even Dave's Asian Supermarket let me down.

#firstworldproblems

So, today, I've fallen back on an ol' favourite: gammon joint in cola. I even dropped a few chunks of onion into the slow cooker for extra zhuzh. Sure it'll turn out all right. And if it doesn't, well, Co-op's open 'til eleven and they have Kashmiri butter chicken pizza.

Winner winner, Sunday dinner.

Just a couple of completely unrelated but fabulous things for your delectation:

Well, that's almost all I have for now except to say I have News to Share but it'll have to wait until next week.

Because I'm a big tease.

Like those people who put up a vague crypto-status on Facebook, demand All the Attention, then Don't Want to Talk About It.

That aside, usual big-ups due to Charlie, to Jos, to Fern, to Natalie, to Georgie and to Ma QB for Support behind the Scenes this week, and why the heck am I Randomly Capitalising Things as if to give them Prominence and Significance? Who Knows?

Have good weeks, you gorgeous lot, and, goodnight, FOQ ... wherever you are.

Sunday Summary | half empty like a pessimist's wine glass

Dearest FOQ

I begin this post as requested by Alun:

with a tribute to the crooner whose work we are lovingly embracing at Voicerox at present. I give you thiiiiis:

and, even more topically given that whole Force Awakens malarkey, thiiiiiiiiis!

And now for Evie upon request ... thiiiiiiis:

{There's plenty more where that came from.}
This week I have mostly been ...

... well, actually, not been doing much at all, truth be told. Which is OK. The pre-Christmas period was, as I like to say, nuts on toast (which makes no sense, which is the point) so to have a little post-Chrimbo down-time (in which to get my affairs in order and to enjoy the new electric undersheet I've just purchased #middleage) is bliss. It's an introvert thing.

I have however been ...

Back to work

And that's all I'll say on the matter. Apart from, I miss Christmas and the abyss of nothingness. I miss Bucks Fizz [the drink, not the 80s pop combo] being acceptable at breakfast time, and the biscuit window of opportunity.

... When's it Easter weekend?

Reading

I've genuinely lost sight of the "all about me" quotient of this book; it is actually superb. I love Strayed's writing style and her honesty, and her occasional potty-mouth, and the fact she can genuinely write from her experience.

Elizabeth Gilbert next up, I think. I'm in a real non-fiction groove at the moment.

because, hey,

{"A life lived in fear is a life half-lived"}
Watching

30 Rock

because after a quick potential-jump-the-shark period where it lost direction it is still snorfle-rousingly funny*. Especially after wine. And there is always much Liz Lemon-identification to be gleaned.

29 Reasons Why You Are Liz Lemon | Number 15. True story.

*That said, the Season 5 'live' show was dismal. Huge BLURG to that. Word to the wise: enforced laughter immediately negates actual humour. Fact.

Also,

Taggart {'Flesh and Bone'}

{photo via here}
Because a bit of gritty 90s McCrime is the perfect entertainment for a Saturday night, amiright?

All together now: there's been a muddddderrrr!

...

This was then chased up with The Fall. Because of the fabulosity (and ever so slight creepiness) of Gillian Anderson.

Cooking

Yes.

You read that correctly.

For the first time in many many of the months I managed to construct something "edible" with my own two hands that did not limit itself to squeezing ketchup onto pre-constructed macaroni cheese, and I managed not to maim myself. [All right so the chicken was mildly underdone but I didn't eat the bits that were still pink or still clucking so, props to me.]

I win at life!

BEHOLD (unless you're a vegetarian in which case, SCROLL!)

Above is my fairly accurate representation (made weirdly pale in Photoshop) of this dish:

from the Guardian for Meals for One (aka Scoff for Singletons) -- I give you Grilled chicken thighs with bulgur pilaf. Not as poncey as it sounds, actually.

What is poncey, however, is having a microstrop in Sainsbury's:

#firstworldproblems #thestruggleisreal

And now for another musical interlude, in tribute to both Barry and Gary:

neatly balanced out with:

{C'mon, is that not an accurate representation of how we
all felt on Monday morning?}
And if you're feeling bad about breaking those resolutions you made this time last week, don't -- this song will make you feel so much better (thanks to Nats for this one):

{Meghan Trainor and James Corden}

As will this slightly less pastel little article by Oliver Burkeman in The Guardian: New year, new you? Forget it

Encouraging, no?

I can issue no promises that next week's Summary will be more exciting or structured than this week's but hey.

When in doubt, sloth it out.

{Sloth it out?! I don't even know what I mean any more. But look! The cuteness!}
In the meantime, this week's arbitrary, honorary mentions go to Charlie, Jos, Fern, Natalie, Georgina, Glenda, Jess (even though she posted those scary-as-heck Public Information Films on her Facebook and now I need therapy!), and to Alun and Evie for their suggestions for content when I was plumbing the depths a bit.
